ROSA RUBIO “SPACE AND MATTER”

The most distinctive sign in the work of Rosa Rubio (Madrid 1961), may well be the compact persistence found upon reaching deeper into its significance. Her painting does not represent reality, but another internal intention.

Within a language of abstract expressionism, she creates individual forms or organic associations but always with the need to reveal, to cross frontiers.

Far from imposed patterns, the figures beam out living continuities of biological and expansive structure, distortions that open up an oniric world.

Human silhouettes, woman and forlornness, crucifixes, houses, birds or trees are donned with distinctive character, they are enriched by means of their deformations or the celerity in the making. They are stains, lines or spurts that overcome the limits inviting afterthought. They represent a sort of contradiction where both assurance and pessimism are present as well as ingenuity or irony.

Even though each work shows structure and integrity, the essence of the project is not in the elements themselves, but in the nature of the whole.

Each of the works manifests a dramatic purpose by intentionally modifying academicisms with spatial situations, in order to provoke a certain enigma to their symbolic content.

The artist presents us with houses, iconographic link of communication, whose walls represent the essential stability, but it does so without windows …, there is no interaction with the atmosphere, nor openings to contemplate the outside …, not even a door to access.

Defensive vegetables, thorned. Powerful trees, fruitful of good omen, rooted with connections to sky and earth. Tree hands, source of life. Birds observant, long – legged, voracious…

And she does it on paper medium, in a peculiar way of superimposing, creating material accumulations which give form to the warp over which the painting is frameworked. Oils, acrylics, pigments, with a mixed protocol based on fillings, velatura, or encaustics giving life to chromatic contrasts of black, white, grey or cream, with the introduction of red color to mark with character.

Without any doubt, a forceful collection, full with strength and imagination, in small format (34x24cm) and medium (61 x 61cm), that explains the 25 years of dedication to art of the author, and her recent successes.
